Weekly News 12th December 2019

This week, we have been writing newspaper articles to tell the story of the Great Northern Race. This has brought our English work for this half term to a conclusion. The children have really enjoyed this book and have produced some brilliant writing.

We have also been looking at how Christians celebrate Christmas around the world, exploring some of the wonderful customs and traditions.

In maths we have been using bar models to help us understand word problems. Get your child to explain how a bar model works to you.

Tomorrow, the children will have their '66' tables test. As always, the target is to get one more correct than they did the previous day. Perhaps they could even join the '66' club.

It has been another excellent half term with your amazing children. We would particularly like to thank you once again for all the help that you have given the children with their home learning this half term. We have been so pleased with what they have done and, more importantly, they have been so pleased with what they have achieved.

Weekly news 5th December 2019

In English, we are coming to the end of the 'Pugs of the Frozen North', an ending which is both happy and sad. The children will be writing a newspaper report reporting on the whole race.

In maths, we have continued to explore factor pairs and how they can be used with 'associative law' and 'commutativity' to help us carry out mental multiplications.

In science, we have continued to explore solids, liquids and gases by creating reactions which change the states of materials. We inflated balloons by making carbon dioxide from bicarbonate of soda and vinegar.

We followed this up by making and packaging bath bombs in technology.

Hopefully we will see you all at the Christmas fair tomorrow evening to listen to the song that the children have prepared to perform.

Friday, 29 November 2019

Weekly News 29th November 2019

In maths this week, we have been working on multiplication and division facts. We have particularly focused on ways in which we can find the factors of numbers.

Our 'Pugs' story has become particularly exciting, with Shen and Sika only just escaping from the spaghetti Yetis. The children had great fun inventing and describing different kinds of snow.

This week, the children used the data loggers to measure and record the changing temperature of water. They learned how to record their results as a bar chart and then comment on what they had discovered.

We have also begun to learn our song for the Christmas fair next week. We hope that we will see you all there then.

Weekly News 21st November 2019

This week, we have been totally terrified by the huge Kraken that terrorised Shen and Sika. We have written class poems to which we we have all contributed. Here is Giraffes poem:

The ocean king is the Kraken
An unlit figure from out of the ice
Endless purple dark tentacles. Sucking everything,
Gigantic monster.

Deep dangerous eyes
Colossal twisting head
Terrifying, lethal, big and strong.

Huge, threatening, fierce.
Big beak gaping.
Razor sharp.
Chilly as ice.

Strong deadly. glaring up
Twirling twist
Sharp.
Staring pupil red like a ball of fire.
Tougher than wire
Observing from cold ice

An unsafe creature under the sea.

And here is the Lions:

Big, giant, colossal destroyer, sleeping in the deep,

And every True Winter, he’s looking for something to eat.
Polar bears and killer whales are not safe, from this enormous beast.
If they’re unlucky, they’ll be his next feast.

He is fast asleep, the Kraken, in the deep.
A massive monster, a fierce beast,
A legendary squid.
Giant colossal eyes, towering tentacles twitching, as strong as a rock.

Killer Kraken rises from the deep dark hole,
Looking for his breakfast.
Tentacles moving, searching, horrifying.
Then, the stupendous squid, finding nothing, vanishes back into the deep.

In maths, we have continued to challenge ourselves to use

the seven and nine times tables facts to solve problems. We

have also encouraged the children to use 'Hit the Button' to

practice their number facts to 100. Please help them to do

this at home, if you can.

We are now starting to see some of the home learning

around the Pugs of the Frozen North. Thanks for all the

support that you are giving the children.

Weekly News 14th November '19

Thank you to all those who managed to join us for our writing cafe this week. It was so good to see so many parents so keen to engage with their children's learning. The children really enjoyed themselves and appreciated having you there.

In English this week, the children have been looking carefully at the main characters in Pugs of the Frozen North and have used their knowledge of these characters to  write a letter about them to the Snow Father.

In Topic, we have been looking at Medieval Medicine and have discovered some of the disgusting and appalling cures that were used to treat illnesses.

Still thinking about potions, in Science we learned about the different states of matter and thought about the properties of solids, liquids and gases.

Some parents have asked about the homework for this term. There should be a copy in their homework book, but I have also attached a copy here :

Weekly news 7th November 2019

It has been another really busy week. Year 4 finished off their Roman topic by performing their dramatisation of the Roman invasion of Britain for their year group assembly. They worked hard to learn their lines, performed brilliantly and were so pleased that so many parents were able to get along to see them. Thank you to everyone who was able to turn up.

We have now started our 'potions' topic and have already made our own imaginary potions inspired by 'George's Marvellous Medicine'

You will already have seen your child's homework for this half term. On top of the usual reading, spelling and times tables practice, we have asked them to reproduce the frozen world of 'Pugs of the Frozen North'. This can take any form and can be done at any time. We hope that it is a good opportunity for your child to have fun.

In maths, we have started to think about multiplication and division and have been finding out how we multiply and divide by 10 and 100.

Don't forget that we will have our reading cafe nest Tuesday (12th November) from 9:00am. We would love to see you there.

Thursday, 31 October 2019

Weekly news 31st October 2019

This week, we have been very busy preparing for our year group assembly. We will be performing a play about the Romans in Britain and Boudicca's rebellion. The children have all been very keen to have speaking parts and are working hard to learn them.

This is the last week of our Roman's topic and after next Monday, we will be starting a new topic called 'Potions'. Our main focus will be the changing state of matter and the history of medicine.

In maths, we are finding out about perimeter and have been using our new knowledge to solve challenges and problems.

The children's home learning this term has been absolutely outstanding and we have lots of copies of their work displayed on our walls. Thank-you to all of you who have helped and supported your children to demonstrate such brilliant learning. This term, you will find that we have asked the children to undertake a single project, which they will hopefully find fun and engaging.

This week, we also had a visit from the children's author and illustrator Nick Butterworth. The children were amazed to see how quickly and skilfully he drew his characters and listened carefully to his advice on starting and writing stories.

We look forward to seeing you at our assembly at 2.15 on Monday.

Thursday, 17 October 2019

Weekly News 17th October 2019

This week, we have continued to tell the story of Boudicca in our extended writing. We have been using expanded noun phrases, paragraphs and pronouns. Next half term, we will tell the story of the Romans in Britain in our class assembly. This will be  on the 4th November at 2.30pm.

We have also looked at what the Romans brought us. we were amazed to find out that they brought us stinging nettles and cats.

We have completed our eggshell experiments and have found out that orange juice is as bad for our teeth as Coke.

We will not be giving out the homework books this week, so that you can have a more relaxing holiday, but feel free to continue practicing your times tables. The children are really enjoying using Times Tables Rock Stars. Don't forget that you can also access Bug Club at home.

Have a lovely half term!

Thursday, 10 October 2019

Weekly News 10th October 2019

This week, we have been pulling together our English work from this term by retelling the Boudicca story in our own words. The children have loved learning this story and have been learning how to use paragraphs, extended noun phrases and pronouns.

In maths we have been practicing formal method for subtraction and have been learning how to exchang tens and hundreds to help us.

In science, we have investigated the effects that different liquids have on our teeth by experimenting on eggshells. The children are currently making careful observations of their experiments.

We are currently trialing 'Times Tables Rock stars to help the children learn their tables. The children have all been given  logon IDs. Please help your child to access this at home: https://play.ttrockstars.com .

Don't forget that next week is the end of half term and we shall be testing the children on the 66 tables facts. The target for all children is to get at least one more than they got last time.

Thursday, 3 October 2019

Weekly News 3rd October

This week, we have continued to think about the Romans and their impact on the British Isles. We have had some amazing home learning around this to look at and have been really pleased by how much support the children are getting at home.

The children have had fun this week making roman style clay pots as well as imagining that they are Romans hunting the dangerous outlaw, Boudicca.

In maths, we are learning formal methods for adding together larger numbers. Next week, we will be doing the same for subtraction.

Please remember that the children will be doing Rugby for the next few weeks and will be going out in all weathers. Please can you make sure that they have warm P.E. kit to wear.

Weekly News 26th September 2019

We have had another brilliant week in year 4.

On Friday, we went to the Time and Tide museum, where we experienced living in Roman Britain. We were slaves to a rich Roman lady, we were Celtic druids making potions, we were Roman legionnaires and we were Iceni warriors with blue painted faces. The children behaved brilliantly and were given a great platform for our work in Topic and English.

In maths, we are ordering numbers in the thousands. If your child would like to practice, this is a good game that they can try at home:  click here .

Don't forget that your child has access to a brilliant reading resource: Bug Club. They can check their logon details in class if they are unsure. They also have a logon to Education City, details of which are stuck into their home learning books (Giraffes will go in next week).

Weekly News. Week Beginning 3rd June 2019

This week, the children began their new topic, Road Trip USA, by imagining that the school grounds were the United States of America. They had to find and visit fourteen different states that were marked out on the field. Once they had done that, they had to locate the states in an atlas and really began to appreciate quite how vast the USA is. Over the next few weeks, we will be developing these geographical skills as well as thinking about what life is like for the people that live there. We will also think about the many native American tribes.

In English, we have started reading a non fiction book about plastic waste in Africa. We will be focusing on this issue for the next few weeks.

In maths, the Children are again looking at time in digital and analogue, as well as 12 and 24 hour. If your child has a watch, we strongly recommend that they wear it as often as possible as it can make a magical difference to their learning of this sometimes tricky topic.

Thursday, 23 May 2019

Weekly News. Week Beginning 20th May 2019

Sports day went extremely well on Monday and all the children in year 4 had a brilliant time.

This week, we have finished reading the saga of Beowulf. He met a rather gruesome end, but many of the children were cheering on the dragon! Our last activity will be to map out the story so that we can retell it orally in the Anglo Saxon Style.

We came to the end of our topic on Traders and Raiders with an examination of the Viking people and their invasion of the Anglo Saxon lands. We have finished our topic now, but if your children would like to learn more, we can strongly recommend that they visit Sutton Hoo over the half term.

In maths, we have continued using our knowledge of decimals to help us solve problems with money. Don't forget that the children need to be practising for the Government's times tables tests in June. Check out the link on the previous post.

In a few weeks, the children will be sitting the new government times tables test. It would be great if you could help prepare your child for this by using this online simulator:  https://www.timestables.co.uk/multiplication-tables-check/.

Thursday, 16 May 2019

Weekly news. Week beginning 13th May 2019

This week, we have delved further into the murky world of Beowulf and Grendel. Our stomachs have lurched at the thought of the terrible injuries inflicted on the monster by the hero and we have imagined different ways that the story could play out afterwards.

With warfare on our minds, we have also studied the Anglo -Saxon kingdoms that arose in the seventh century, and how the kings held their power. The children have challenged themselves to learn, and remember, the names of all seven kingdoms.

In science, we have continued to look at electrical circuits. We have learned how to draw diagrams to represent them, and help us predict how they will work.

In maths, we have begun to apply our shiny new knowledge of decimals to the understanding of pounds and pence.

We have made the most of the sunshine this week, and have been practising  our race for sports day. We hope you will be able to join us next monday.

Thursday, 9 May 2019

Weekly News. Week Beginning 6th May 2019

This week, we imagined that we were living in Anglo Saxon times. The children had to  find out  what daily life was like and then use their developing powers of historical empathy to write an account of their day. They were able to use the experience of their visit to West Stow to really bring their accounts to life.

In English, we have continued reading the Beowulf Saga. We have been thinking about, visualising and writing about the monster, Grendel.

In maths, we have been ordering decimal numbers using the < and > symbols. We are now thinking about how to apply our knowledge to real life situations, such as money.

After learning how to weave last week, we have started to weave our own fabrics with wool.
Learning from our mistakes in Art with our Anglo-Saxon weaving! (They're starting to take shape though!)

Thursday, 2 May 2019

This week, we have delved more deeply into the world of the Anglo Saxons. We have looked at the key events of their colonisation of Britannia and then the invasion of the Vikings into their lands.

We have also begun to read the story of the legendary Anglo Saxon hero, Beowulf. We have used drama to imagine ourselves in the feasting hall of the Geats and have used our experiences at West Stow to help us create a setting.

We have also looked more closely at how the Anglo Saxons made clothes and textiles and have begun to practise weaving our own materials.

In maths, we are making wholes using decimal fractions and are reinforcing our understanding of place value.

In Science, we have begun to look at electricity and have made electrical circuits. with bulbs, buzzers and motors.

Thursday, 25 April 2019

Weekly News. Week beginning 22nd April 2019

Welcome back to the summer term!

We have started off this week by focusing on our new topic, Traders and Raiders, which brings the story of the British Isles on from where we left it in the Autumn term. This time we are looking at the colonization of the land by Angles and Saxons.

We had a brilliant time on Tuesday, visiting the recreated Anglo Saxon settlement at West Stow. We were able to investigate and interrogate the evidence that the Anglo Saxons left behind.

It was great to be able to imagine what daily life would be like for Anglo Saxon people.

In maths, we have carried on thinking about decimal numbers and have learned about hundredths.

The children have continued to make great progress with their times tables and reading. Don't forget that they should practice these regularly as part of their homework as well as the activities that are given out in their home learning books.

Friday, 5 April 2019

Musical Instruments that we made at home.

Weekly News. Week beginning 1st April 2019

In our final week of this term, we discovered that the title of our book is The Tin Forest. Now that we know the story, we have been working out how to turn it into scripts to perform to the class. The children have really enjoyed the drama.

In maths, we have learned how to turn tenths fractions into decimals and then divide and multiply them by 10.

In R.E, we have been learning about how Christians seek to bring God's kingdom to earth by looking at the work of Christian Aid in Kenya.

There is no homework over the Easter holidays, but we would like the children to continue practising the times tables as well as reading every day.

Don't forget that we will be visiting West Stow on the first Wednesday back. Your child will need a packed lunch.

We hope you all have a lovely Easter.

Thursday, 28 March 2019

Weekly news beginning 25th March 2019

This week, we have continued our adventures in sound. In science, we constructed electrical circuits to make buzzers work. The noise was unbearable, so we considered how we could absorb the sound with different materials and then used decibel meters to measure their effectiveness.

We also continued to use ICT to record our podcasts on how sound travels. Next week, we will edit in some of the tracks that we have made on Garage Band.

In English, we have imagined what a world would be like without life and colour and then have thought about how the old man in our story could go about changing that.

In maths we have begun to think about decimal fractions.

Our maths cafe went very well this week, and the children had a great deal of fun exploring ways to learn and remember the multiplication facts.

We were particularly pleased with our cityscape arrays, which we will put up on display.

Monday, 25 March 2019

Thursday, 21 March 2019

Weekly News, Week Beginning 18th March 2019

Our investigations into sound continue. This week, we learned that sound vibrations travel best through materials where the particles are close together. Using this knowledge, we made string telephones to communicate with each other. We have also continued to practised using garage band to make our own music.

Our confidence with fractions has improved hugely this week and we have learned to find unit and non unit fractions of numbers and quantities.

Later this year, the children will be asked to undertake a times table test. If you want to help them practise for it, there is a times table simulator at this address that you can use: https://collins.co.uk/pages/primary-mathematics-times-tables-test-simulator

In English, we have begun to look at a new text, but are keeping the title secret for now. We have encountered a new setting and a new character and have explored exciting vocabulary that helps us describe his personality.

I hope your children are enjoying making their musical instruments at home. We have already had a few brilliant ones in. Keep an eye on this blog for photos coming up soon.

Thursday, 14 March 2019

Weekly News 14th March 2019

This week, inspired by Joseph Coelho's poems about his 'Dada', we have been writing our own poetry about a special person in our lives. The children have been ambitious in their use of amazing language, similes, metaphors and alliteration.

The children have also been challenging themselves to further understand fractions, particularly mixed numbers. They have used equipment and bar models to help them get their heads around the ideas.

In science, we have been learning more about sound and have been preparing radio shows to explain how the vibrations travel. We are learning how to record these on Audacity to create podcasts and hope to post some of them on this blog in future.

We have also continued to use Garage band to create our own musical tracks.

In art, we are designing album covers. We have asked the children to bring in old magazines or print images off the internet at home that they could bring in to use as a part of a collage.

Thursday, 7 March 2019

Weekly News 7th March 2019

This week, we have delved deeply into the world of sound. In science, we have learned that sound is a form of vibration and that it originates in vibrating things. We carried out a noise survey around the school and discovered that the noisiest place was the school hall.

The children have also begun to use garage band to compose, mix and record their own musical tracks. You can see what these look like here.

Many of the poems, that we have read in English have also had a basis in sound and music. We have explored rhyme and rhythm and read about singing bowls and gamelans.

In maths, we have discovered that we can make equivalent fractions using multiplication and division.

This half term, we are also planning to make our own album covers and have begun to prepare for this by drawing and colouring abstract pictures.

Thursday, 28 February 2019

Weekly new 28th February 2019

So this week, we have started our new topic, 'Playlist'. On Monday morning, we listened to some pan pipe music and had a think about how we could make our own, which we then did. The children then wrote tunes that they could perform.

In the afternoon, we held a concert. Mr Allen played the piano and saxophone and Mr Clarke showed some tunes that he is learning on the banjo. Children also performed on piano, ukelele and pan pipes.

We have also spent some time this week looking at instruments from around the world, using atlases and maps to locate the countries that they come from.

In English this half term, we will be mostly looking at poetry. This week, we began to write some of our own which will should be good practise for the composing and songwriting that we will be doing.

In maths, we have started looking (again!) at fractions. For the next few weeks, we will be adding and subtracting them as well as finding fractions of quantities.

Thursday, 14 February 2019

Weekly News 14th February 2019

This week, we have imagined Arthur's adventure. The children have used amazing language to describe the capturing of the sound of a cat's paw or the climbing of the world tree and have written them up as a diary entry.

We have looked at food chains and used the language of 'consumer' and 'producer' to describe and explain how energy is moved through them.

Continuing to think about healthy teeth, we also spent a great afternoon looking at a variety of low sugar scones, assessing their taste and texture and analysing their nutritional content. We then made our own sweet and savoury scones without using sugar,

In maths, we have been looking at the area of 2D rectilinear shapes. The children really enjoyed this and have developed a high degree of confidence.

Next term, our topic will be 'Playlist' and we will be thinking about music and sound. As a part of our first day, we will be getting the children to make musical instruments. We will also be holding  an impromptu concert just for the Lions and Giraffes. We have asked any of the children who play an instrument (and want to!) to practise a piece over the holidays which they can play to Year 4. Mr Allen will bring in his saxophone and Mr Clarke will dust off his banjo and have a go.

Thursday, 7 February 2019

In our English this week, we have continued to read 'Arthur and the Golden Rope'. We have used drama to explore Arthur's dilemma about whether or not he should go on his quest. We followed this up with some brilliant writing describing some of his adventures. the children really enjoyed extending their vocabulary to describe the terrifying challenges that Arthur encountered.

In science, we looked in more detail at the digestion system and practised the technical vocabulary for the key parts of the body.

In maths, we are now spending some time looking at the area of shapes. The children are also practising the times tables ready for a test next week and many are hoping to get inducted into the 66 Club.

Please remember that your child has a log on for 'Bug Club'. It is a brilliant reading resource, and the children really enjoy using it. Please encourage them to use it at home.

Thursday, 31 January 2019

This week we have been preparing for assembly all about teeth.  We have had fun learning and reciting the old Pam Ayres poem 'I wish I'd looked after my teeth'.

Our topic has now moved down the body and we are thinking about all the horrible things that happen to our food as it makes its way through.

We have been practising speech punctuation and using inverted commas (speech marks). We can now imagine the most amazing conversations.

In maths, we have used equipment to help divide 2 digit numbers by single digits. We have discovered remainders and worked out how we can exchange tens for units.

Thursday, 24 January 2019

This week, we discovered that you can protect the calcium in an egg by coating it with flouride from toothpaste. We soaked treated and untreated eggs in acetic acid (vinegar) and compared their shells. Can you tell which is which?

We have spent some time this week looking at newspapers and have begun to write our own accounts of the wolf attack on the Icelandic village. The children have had great fun inventing characters to interview.

In maths, the children have been finding ways to  multiply 2 digit numbers by single digits. They have used a range of apparatus and have begun to use formal written methods.

We have also carried out some mathematics assessments, and the children are all very proud of the impressive progress that they have made.

We have reminded the children to keep practising their times tables. There is still plenty of room in the 66 club!

Don't forget that our year 4 assembly will be at 2.15pm on Friday 1st February. We look forward to seeing you then.

Thursday, 17 January 2019

This week, we have been finding out what happens when we clean our teeth. We stained our teeth using disclosing tablets, which showed how much plaque was left on our teeth. What we discovered was that those children who cleaned their teeth in the way their dentist told them to, had the cleanest teeth. What a surprise!

In maths, we have been exploring multiplication and have been finding out about commutativity and associative law. This means that it doesn't matter what order we multiply numbers in, we just need to find the easiest way to do it. We have also explored factors and prime numbers.

In English, we have thought about exploration and adventure and why people might want to visit Iceland. We have written adverts to persuade them to go.

The children have continued to access Bug Club in school and are enthusiastic to use it at home. Please let us know if you experience any difficulties getting on.

Friday, 11 January 2019

Today, inspired by 'Arthur and the Golden Rope', we worked together to write a piece of free verse about books.

Books
Books can be a world of wonder
Anything you want
A path to GREATNESS
A path to wisdom
Dangerous and safe.
Lead to treasure
Your own adventure.
Your own expedition.

There are enough in the world to create a sea
Go look and you will see
They will live for eternity.

Books are funny things.
Educational, inspirational teachers.
So pick up a book and FLY away.

Cars taking you on a quest
Across the world
Through your imagination.
Can be funny but can be scary

Sad.
Fun.
Addictive.

Words shimmer over a shining sea
In books
like diamonds in a cave.
Fly away.
Laugh away.
